Medication
Pembina Trails School Division policy is very explicit concerning procedures for parents and for the school in matters of medication at school. Students on urgently required medications, such as bronchial aerosols and epipens, must carry the medication on their person at all times. If an Epipen is required, please have your child carry the single dose version rather than the TwinJect (which contains a hypodermic needle). Where a question arises regarding the urgency of medication or the capability of a student, the parent/guardian shall be required to provide the school with a written statement from the physician authorizing storage in a location other than on the person of the student.
Divisional policy also states that it is preferable for medications to be taken at home. When this is not possible, the school staff can administer student medication during school hours if parents submit the Permission to Administer Medication forms and medication to the school office. The forms give parental permission for school administration of any medication that is in a pharmacy-labelled container. Medication should not be stored in lunch kits, backpacks, or in the classrooms. When students are capable, they can self-administer medication if parental permission is given by completing the Permission to Self-Administer forms and medication is submitted to the school office in a container clearly marked with the student's name and dosage, i.e. a Tylenol bottle marked with the child's name with the recommended dosage on the label.
Should your child require medication at school, all forms are available at the school office and arrangements are coordinated through the administrative secretary.
Please contact the principal if you have any questions or concerns regarding medication for your child.
