Standard of Behaviour
The Pembina Trails School Division Standard of Behaviour is a teaching model, rather than a mandate for behaviour. The emphasis is on teaching rather than telling, nurturing rather than sanctioning, and including rather then excluding. The objective is to ensure, to the fullest extent possible, the provision of a safe and caring community for all. All parents receive a Standard of Behaviour pamphlet each school year. This document outlines (a) the responsibilities of students, staff, and parents; (b) disruptive behaviour; (c) severely disruptive behaviour; (d) and appropriate responses. Please take the time to read this document.
Discipline is situational, and any and every response to behaviour must align with the circumstances of the situation. The intention of discipline is to restore safety, change the inappropriate behaviour, and promote the learning of self-control. Restitution is an approach to discipline and counseling that encourages a person to grow towards self-evaluation, self-discipline, and self-respect. It is our model of discipline here at Royal. Restitution practice teaches a person to behave for self-respect rather than to avoid punishment or gain reward. Restitution invites people to understand the need behind their behaviour, to fix the mistake, and to learn to make better choices for the future.
In the event of a student going below the line in the area of safety or respect, the school will act with appropriate consequences. People in our school deserve to feel safe, both physically and emotionally, and to be free from any form of harassment. The staff of Royal School will always respond to ensure students’ sense of safety.
