Student Assessment

The school year begins with a formative assessment process called ‘Strong Beginnings’. Students are scheduled for an appointment with their teacher(s) on September 23 or 26. This time is used by teachers to establish beginning starting points for children’s learning. Teachers use this information to make decisions about the instruction of your child and the class. This cyclical process of gathering information about student learning and using it to plan for appropriate instruction continues throughout the year. To accommodate these appointments, there will be no regular classes on September 23 and 26.

Royal School uses current research of best assessment practices, and emphasis is on assessment for learning and student self-assessment. We have continued with the pilot format for reporting and communicating since that time. Student/Parent/Teacher Tri-Conferences will take place in November and March. We will issue formal report cards--assessments of learning--in January and June.

We also invite parents/guardians to phone or arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher(s) at any time during the school year if you have a concern or question.
