Technology
Royal School was a pilot school for the Pembina Trails Literacy with Information & Communication Technology (LwICT) initiative in 2006-2008. The purpose was to facilitate a gradual phase-in of the provincial LwICT continuum, which focuses on the integration of technology in the classroom and electronic portfolios. Two teachers, the teacher librarian, and the school principal have participated on the PTSD learning team. The learning team reported to and shared strategies with the Royal School staff regarding the continuum and technological learning opportunities for our students. All homeroom teachers report on LwICT on the formal report cards in January and June.
We have a computer lab, which houses 30 computers, and have at least one computer in every classroom. In addition, we have interactive whiteboards (SMARTBoards), projectors, and DVD drives in all homeroom, the Music Room, and the Computer Lab. Every teacher has a digital camera for student/teacher use for PowerPoint presentations, Photostory projects, etc. We have several digital video cameras, a Flip camera, and a document camera.
Teachers have collaborated via school learning teams to develop interactive whiteboard lessons and several staff members have visited other schools that utilize interactive whiteboards and other technological tools. Each year, the teachers participate in a Royal Institute of Technology Professional Development Day during which they explore technological possibilities for students in interactive whiteboards, Photostory, MovieMaker, wikis, blogs, Microsoft Frontpage, Protopage, Google, and Google Earth, Audacity, Protopage, and we continuously learn via our professional team meetings.
